Announcement history
New Horizons was first announced on September 13 th , 2018, during a Nintendo Direct with a 2019 release date and no official subtitle. The announcement of New Horizons occurred subsequently after Isabelle was announced to be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
On February 20 th , 2020, in an Animal Crossing: New Horizons Direct, an in-depth look in the game was given.
The game was finally released on March 20 th , 2020 as announced during E3 2019. There is also a channel for the game in the "News" section of the Nintendo Switch. The first article ever released was an article relating to Bunny Day.
Following the release of the game, periodic updates have been added, fixing bugs and adding new content. New major updates are added approximately every 1-2 months, adding new content alongside returning content. Alongside any new content, many of the events and features that were present in New Leaf have been gradually added every update, along with the return of a number of special characters every major update. Announcements for new updates for the game are often posted on their official YouTube channel.
On April 21 st , 2020, a video was posted to the Nintendo YouTube channel detailing a new update, version 1.2.0, including new holiday events, new island visitors, and a new paintings section to the museum. Subsequent updates were announced via additional videos posted on their official YouTube channel.
On June 22 nd , 2020, the trailer for the diving feature was announced for the first ever summer update, and the feature has been fully implemented in Version 1.3.0. Along with this is the return of Pascal.
Most of the "traditional" events from New Leaf were ran during the first year of the game's release, with exception of April Fool's Day which did not happen on 2020 or 2021.
Two crossover celebrations have been added in two different updates, 1.8.0 and 1.9.0. Version 1.8.0 celebrated the Super Mario franchise's 35th anniversary, featuring Mario-themed items that were added in March 1, 2021. Version 1.9.0 returned the Sanrio-exclusive villagers that were present in Welcome amiibo, plus Sanrio-themed items.
As of Wednesday, October 13 th , 2021, the current version is Version 1.11.1.
New features
NookPhone
As the game progresses, the player can customize their NookPhone's appearance through a customizable case which costs 1,800 Nook Miles, use the Island Designer app to landscape their island, create more complex custom designs through Pro Designs, and even order items from the Catalog through their NookPhone.

In New Horizons, players are able to use workbenches to craft furniture, tools, and some consumables (medicine and fish bait) using various materials gathered from their island and on mystery tour islands.
Furniture Customization
Some furniture can also be customized at workbenches using customization kits purchased through Nook's Cranny. There are some furniture items that are unable to be customized.
Town Customization
New Horizons gives the player much more freedom to customize their island compared to previous iterations. The player is able to place furniture both indoors and outdoors; choose starting locations for their home, their residents' homes, and buildings other than Resident Services; move buildings once placed; place bridges and ramps; and change river paths and cliffs. Fences were also introduced to the game along with an official path creator, whereas in others games players would place designs on the ground for paths.
Additionally, when eating food such as fruit, turnips, or bamboo shoots, the player gains energy. Energy can be used to uproot whole trees, which can be planted elsewhere at their current height, and destroy rocks, which will respawn the following day (one per day). This energy can also be disposed of by using a toilet.
New Buildings and Locations

is where the player can craft, buy or sell items. It is initially where the player can sell items and buy from Timmy, before Nook's Cranny is opened. The player can also discuss home expansion with Tom Nook. The Nook Stop is also located there, where the player can use the ABD, buy from the catalog, and redeem Nook Miles. Once the building is upgraded, Isabelle will handle services like resetting villagers to their default clothing or catchphrase, while Tom Nook will continue handling home expansion and start handling building construction and moving. is where the player can go to visit other player's islands or have them visit their own. It is also where the player can go on island tours. To go on an island tour, the player will have to redeem their Nook Miles for a Nook Miles Ticket, which costs 2,000 Nook Miles. While on an island tour, the player will be unable to bring items that will not fit in their pockets. The player will be able to bring additional tools to obtain materials such as bugs, insects, fish, fruit, etc. The player can also borrow tools from Wilbur for Nook Miles. It is also possible to meet other animals through the island tour and invite them to move to the player's own island.

Miscellaneous
During the start of New Horizons, the player is asked to customize their character's eyes, skin, hair, nose, and mouth. These settings can only be changed through a vanity or mirror after creating the player's island. More hairstyles and colors can only be obtained by redeeming Nook Miles at a Nook Stop. A new addition to custom designs is face paint, which can be done by clicking on a custom design, selecting "Wear", and then selecting "Face Paint" once more. In the original Japanese version of the game, the player also has to choose between being a boy or a girl, but this was changed to simply read "choose your style," with the boy and girl subtitles being entirely removed in the American localization to accommodate non-binary players.
Clothing will be more characterized with many more realistic types of clothes including sweatshirts around the waist, backpacks, and phone cases.
Tom Nook, Timmy, and Tommy also change their clothes in different seasons.
The game now automatically saves, which makes the Reset Surveillance Center obsolete. Due to this, Resetti now works for the rescue services.
Island
Similar to choosing a layout for a town in the previous installment, the player has the option of choosing an island layout when applying. This also includes a choice in either living in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere.
Choosing either of Northern or Southern Hemisphere results in differing seasons depending on the time of year. For example, while it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be winter in the Southern Hemisphere.
As of right now, there is only one island allowed per Nintendo Switch console. After progression in the game, you will be able to change the landscape by unlocking permits. A key difference from the previous installment of New Leaf, there are no bridges or ramps built when the player initially visits the island. The only way to navigate at first around the rivers is to create a vaulting pole with a DIY workbench. After three villagers decide to move in, Tom Nook will be able to create bridges for the island. The player also has to initially unlock a ladder to go up cliffs.
Players should consider the placement of the beaches, river heads, and ocean rocks when deciding on an island as these landforms are non-editable even as the game progresses.
Multiplayer
Party Play
Different user accounts on the same Switch console can create residents within the same island, and when one resident is playing, others can be invited to play as well with the Call Islander app on the NookPhone. During this simultaneous play, the main player is the "leader", and the joined players become "followers". In addition, leaders and followers can redirect making one another leader and follower.
The items that followers pick up will automatically be stored in the Resident Services building's recycling box because they won't have their own pockets, but the items can be claimed at a later time. Once party play ends, the current leader becomes the one playing.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons фанаты серии и просто любители консолей от Nintendo ждали долго — с выхода New Leaf прошло аж восемь лет. И да, за это время вышло три спин-оффа для разных платформ, но игроки уже давно соскучились по большим, полноценным играм в сеттинге «Леса Животных». Всем было ясно, что новая часть просто обязана выйти на портативной консоли Nintendo Switch. Но когда?
Новостей о New Horizons было немного, так что фанатам оставалось довольствоваться лишь крупицами информации. Кое-кто даже волновался, что после не самых удачных релизов Happy Home Designer и Amiibo Festival серия растеряет весь свой шарм, а последующий выход Animal Crossing: Pocket Capm на мобильных платформах и вовсе заставил задуматься о том, а не грозит ли франшизе окончательное забвение?
Как оказалось, все опасения были напрасными: «Новые горизонты» является полноценной игрой и предлагает классический геймплей серии со всеми ее отличительными особенностями. Прежде всего это привязка к реальному времени — все события на острове учитывают время, выставленное на консоли. То есть, к примеру, если какое-то мероприятие в игровом мире назначено на завтра, то это значит, что посетить его можно будет только после смены суток в реальности.
Но к чему такая дотошность? Все просто: игра представляет собой симулятор жизни. Сначала игрок создает своего персонажа с помощью простой, но довольно разнообразной системы кастомизации, выбирает климатическую зону, а также один из нескольких случайно-сгенерированных шаблонов местности, а затем приезжает на остров с поселенцами-животными. Как и раньше, в игре нет четко обозначенной цели: игрок сам решает, что и когда ему делать.
Остров, где все у нас есть
Когда речь идет о «песочницах», то первым делом люди думают о Minecraft и других похожих играх о выживании. Но Animal Crossing: New Horizons на них не очень похожа по причине отсутствия, собственно, механики выживания. На острове нет врагов, кроме кусачих, но не очень-то опасных пчел. Да и питаться персонажу вовсе не обязательно. Нет даже шкалы здоровья, равно как и смерти персонажа. Потерять свой прогресс можно только одним способом — лично стереть сохранение с консоли.
Это, к слову, необходимо, чтобы создать нового персонажа, но никто не запрещает просто создать гостевую учетную запись. Тогда можно играть сразу несколькими героями, но смысла в этом мало. Поэтому если и сравнивать New Horizons, то не с «выживалками», а с серией The Sims, где тоже нет конкретной цели, но вместо этого есть множество возможностей для реализации своего собственного персонажа. Ну или просто расслабиться и подурачиться.
Благодаря этому геймплей умиротворяет и расслабляет, чего почти не осталось в современных играх. Это идеальный досуг после тяжелого рабочего дня или во время длинной поездки. Но есть и обратная сторона медали: если вы ждете, что New Horizons будет постоянно подталкивать и стимулировать вас идти дальше, то будете разочарованы. Эта игра живет сама по себе, и она вполне справится без вашего участия.
Впрочем, некоторые вещи все-таки требуют вмешательства. Развитие острова завязано на улучшении специальных зданий, которыми заведуют неигровые персонажи. Большинство из них — магазины и места для социальной активности. Сами NPC их не строят, так что придется натаскать для них ресурсов. И тогда маленькое поселение постепенно превратится в деревню, а затем — в небольшой городок. А вместе с этим на остров приедут новые жители.
Островитянин, постигший дзен
В Animal Crossing вы — не очередной стереотипный герой, вечно бегающий по чужим заданиям, а островитянин, постигший истинный дзен. Остров и все его богатства никуда не убегут, так что и вам спешить некуда. Но это не значит, что заняться тут нечем. В «Новых Горизонтах» основной упор сделан на исследование окружающего мира и общение. И вот тут маленький остров начинает предлагать действительно большие возможности.
Она строится на двух китах — крафте и торговле. С помощью базовых ресурсов можно создавать инструменты, а с помощью них уже можно раздобыть более продвинутые штуки — например, железную руду. Любые вещи можно обменять на местную валюту. А уже за нее можно купить самые разные предметы, ассортимент которых меняется каждый день. Например, можно обзавестись собственным домом и обставить его на свой вкус.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons постоянно подкидывает что-нибудь новое, но делает это настолько ненавязчиво, что процесс самостоятельного исследования совсем не надоедает. В то же время игра не заваливает однообразной рутиной в духе поиска провианта. А благодаря отсутствию строго структурированных заданий мир кажется по-настоящему живым. Именно поэтому в нем интересно жить, пусть даже персонаж не питается и не борется за существование.
К тому же это одна из тех игр, что постоянно обновляются в реальном времени. Разработчики постоянно проводят особые мероприятия, а также выпускают небольшие дополнения с новым контентом. Поэтому в скором времени New Horizons может стать еще богаче и разнообразнее.

Как и в прошлой части, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, в «Новых Горизонтах» имеется мультиплеер. Игроки могут посещать острова друг друга, общаться, обмениваться предметами и изучать необитаемые территории. Однако, несмотря на обилие возможностей, играть с незнакомыми людьми далеко не так интересно, как со своими друзьями, в этом смысле New Horizons мало отличаются от большинства схожих онлайн-игр.
Куда вольготнее играть локально на одной консоли. Это дешевле, а геймплей почти не отличается. Одной консоли и двух штатных контроллеров хватает на двух игроков, но если есть еще пара JoyCon, то можно играть вчетвером. Единственное ограничение — все игроки всегда должны находиться на одном и том же острове, но так как речь идет о кооперативе, то это условие не вызывает никаких проблем. Да и за подписку платить не нужно.
Красиво жить не запретишь!
Игры Animal Crossing всегда славились симпатичной графикой, и New Horizons — не исключение. При этом технически все сделано качественно — ни лагов, ни просадок FPS за несколько дней игры замечено не было. Картинка стилизована под характерный «мультяшный» стиль франшизы, но при этом щеголяет весьма неплохими эффектами, такими как глубина поля зрения и имитация физики воды. Что-то похожее было в The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, которая подкупала своим милым визуалом.
New Horizons тоже смотрится очень мило. Видно, что разработчики тщательно прорабатывали внешний вид всех персонажей, а также не забыли про любимых игроками героев прошлых частей. Том Нук, Гулливер, Блэзерс — все они тут есть и выполняют схожие функции. Окружение тоже выглядит примерно так же, как и в прошлых частях, но с учетом островной специфики и мощностей консоли. Это однозначно одна из самых красивых игр на Nintendo Switch.
Ну и, конечно, нельзя не отметить наличие полноценного перевода на русский язык. В последнее время свежие релизы редко радуют этим. Тем приятнее видеть локализацию в New Horizons. Перевод затрагивает только текст, и сделан он весьма качественно, а озвучивание диалогов тут «интернациональное» — все персонажи изъясняются на забавной «тарабарщине» без привязки к реальному языку, прямо как в The Sims.
Маленький остров больших возможностей
Есть только два вида геймеров — одни в этом марте будут играть в Doom Eternal, а другие — в Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Восемь лет ожидания не прошли даром — после трех спин-оффов разработчики Nintendo выпустили великолепную во всех отношениях игру.

1.2.0 - Earth Day Update
This update also reworked the bug spawning algorithm in the game. Spawn rates were unified for all insects across all months instead of independent spawn percentages. For example, moths were a spawn rate of 25 during May-Feb, in March they were more common at a rate of 37, and less common in April at a rate of 22. As of 1.2 every month has a spawn rate of 25. In addition, the spawn rate of bugs was modified. Generally, the more valuable bugs were decreased and the less valuable were increased. This affects both the player's island and mystery tours.
This update removed 2 Mystery Island Tours and readjusted the encounter rates for the remaining islands. The island rates that were changed appear to discourage bell income gains.
