Squad, Formation and Tactical Style

A 4-2-3-1 is probably the best-suited formation to the available squad of players. This also helps them maintain the width and pull defenders wide and use the superior dribbling skills of your wingers to create chances.

  3. This is a very young squad and the inexperience will show in big matches.

Football Manager 2021 Arsenal 4-3-2-1 Tactic | Team Guide | FM21

Here is a brief analysis of the Arsenal squad, their club structure, relationship any potential managers will have with the board, expectations and possible tactics any FM manager can use.

About Arsenal

Arsenal, however, have never won the UEFA Champions League and winning that will be a crowning addition to any potential manager taking them over in FM21.

Arsenal are also without the league title for over 10 seasons, so will you as a manager be able to make a difference?

Board Requirements

Arsenal are in the Europa League this season, so the minimum requirements from the board are,

FM21 Arsenal Team Guide - Tactic - Board

1. A top 6 league finish (automatic qualification to the Europa League)

2. Making the final of the Europa League

3. A SF < finish in the FA cup

The club are also blessed with excellent training facilities and a very solid youth setup that churns out league ready players every season.

Squad, Formation and Tactical Style

The Arsenal squad are a blend of young players and seasoned campaigners with most of their players having the potential to be elite FM 2021 players.

There are quite a few tactical setups you could deploy with Arsenal, however, the best-suited ones will be controlled possession/vertical Tiki Taka. This should provide the fast-paced attacking football that the fans demand and could make use of all the fine attacking talent at your disposal. However, against quality attacks or tough away games, one could go with a fluid counter-attack and more balanced mentality.

A 4-3-3 is the ideal formation for Arsenal, but this would mean sacrificing Aubameyang, your best player on the left-wing.

A rough example of what your line-up would look like in a 4-3-2-1 formation is as follows;

Football Manager 2021 FM21 Arsenal Tactic Formation

Download FM2021 Arsenal Tactic

You should play Bernd Leno as a sweeper-keeper in support duty.

Hector Bellerin as a Right Back in a wing-back role, David Luiz as a Ball Playing Defender with Defense/stop role, Gabriel as a Ball Playing Defender and Keiran Tierney as a Left Back with increasing crossing instructions.

Granit Xhaka to be deployed as a deep playmaker with defense duty, Partey in a box to box role and Ceballos as a Mezzala with support duty.

Aubameyang on the left-wing as an inside forward with instructions to stay narrow, Willian as the right-winger who supplies early crosses.

Alexander Lacazette as a lone forward in a deep-lying forward role.

Alternatively, you can go with how Arsenal line up in real life with a 3 at the back formation by slotting Holding or Mustafi in defence. Maitland Niles can be an option at wing-back on either wing.

Key Players

1. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

FM21 Aubameyang

Aubameyang is your star striker who is lightning quick with high acceleration and pace stats. You could use this and have him get behind the defensive line to wreak havoc.

2. Thomas Partey

FM21 Thomas Partey

Partey is a strong box to box player who has the ability to run up and down the pitch for the entire 90 mins. He could be the link between defence and attack and will be one of the most important players of your season.

3. Willian

FM21 Willian

Despite being 32, Willian is one of the fittest players in the league and is an asset to most sides. His industry and quality from the right side will be crucial for Arsenal having a good season.

4. Bernd Leno

FM21 Bernd Leno

Leno is a fine keeper and one of the best in the league. His reflexes will be important in making crucial saves against difficult opponents and will set the team up for success from the back.

Weaknesses

2. The overall squad depth is also quite average outside the first team with the left-wing being the weakest area, so much so that we need to rely on a striker to play out of position and do a job.

3. This is overall a very young squad and could take a few seasons for the youngsters to hit their prime.

Youth Prospects

There are a few exciting young prospects in the ranks who have the potential to be some of the best players in the league. A few examples are;

1. Bukayo Saka

FM21 Bukayo Saka

The young English winger is extremely versatile and is already one of the mainstays of the Arsenal squad. He will only improve with time and has the potential to go on to become one of the best wingers in the game.

2. William Saliba

FM21 William Sadiba

Saliba is one of the best young defenders in the game and will definitely improve the struggling Arsenal defence. He could be used as a backup immediately when you take over and will improve dramatically with game time.

3. Gabriel Martinelli

FM21 Gabriel Martinelli

The 19-year-old Brazilian was having a standout season before injuries sidelined him. Once fit, he can be an important addition to the squad with his versatility and keen eye for goal.

Potential Transfers (in)

Arsenal do have a decent squad but these additions could further improve their depth and performances.

Potential Transfers (Out)

These players may be surplus to requirements at the club or may not be of the expected quality.

Summary

To summarise, Arsenal are a solid club for most FM21 managers. Their blend of youth and experience can be a good mix to manage. Can you challenge yourself to end the league and Champions league draught of Arsenal?

Football Manager 2021 Tactics - Klopp

Jurgen Klopp

On the 27th of February 2001, Jurgen Klopp began his managerial career with Mainz in Bundesliga 2. In his first full season, he implemented his now-famous pressing game. He achieved promotion in 2004 after narrowly missing out in the seasons prior.

In May 2008 he was appointed the manager of Borrusia Dortmund. His spell with the club lasted from 2008 till 2015 and during that time he evolved into the coach and man he is now. He immediately imposed his style onto the club giving them an identity that bucked the trend, his teams were often described as heavy metal in a time dominated by possession. Between 2010-2013 Dortmund were a dominant force in German football, winning the Bundesliga in 2011 and the double the following season. They lost in a hard-fought game in the all-German Champions League final to Bayern Munich.

Since joining Liverpool in 2015, Jurgen Klopp has transformed the Reds into one of the most feared sides in Europe. Similar to his time at Dortmund he has taken a sleeping giant and restored them back to their former selves. It was not without heartache though as Liverpool lost 3 successive finals before finally winning the champions league in 2019, which was backed up with the 2020 Premier League title.

Klopp Tactics

Klopp's objective was to rebuild a club that had just survived financial ruin and did not have the money to compete for players in the transfer market. Therefore, he built a system around Dortmund’s youth players and cheaper experienced players. Below I will outline both the similarities and differences in the approaches used by his Dortmund and Liverpool sides. See the link to RDF's Liverpool tactic. Dortmund under Klopp were a passionate and exciting team, who mastered the transitional phases of games.

If there is a single tactical element to describe Jurgen Klopp, it would be Gegenpressing. All Klopp’s teams are synonymous with quick counters and counter-pressing, however the way Liverpool press has been more controlled and refined compared to the ultra-aggressive pressing of his Dortmund side.

Liverpool and Dortmund differed in their formations, Dortmund played a 4-2-3-1 as their best players played centrally. On the other hand, Liverpool’s strength is in the wide areas and as a result, they play with a 4-3-3. Unsurprisingly the way the teams look to attack is different and a consequence of the attacking methods is seen in the way each team counter presses. In defence Dortmund fall into a compact 4-4-1-1 system but in attack the shape resembles more of a 4-2-4 shape with the wingbacks pushing high to support the attacks.

In order to execute their version of counter-pressing, Dortmund attacked with a narrow shape. Dortmund would usually focus their play down one side of the pitch. With the goal of breaking through on this side or to regain possession quickly after losing the ball with their compact shape. They used the sideline as an extra player increasing the effect of the Gegenpress by further limiting the passing options for the opposition.

Once the ball was turned over the full effect of the Gegenpress would be unleashed with lightning-fast counter-attacks cutting through disorganised opposition defences. Klopp himself stated that “Gegenpressing is the best playmaker” with Dortmund creating high numbers of chances through their counter-pressing game.

Compare this to Liverpool and you can see how the press has been refined over time. As mentioned above the teams attack differently with Liverpool generally facing teams using a low block forcing them remain more patient in attack, they averaged close to 60% possession over their title winning season. Liverpool’s version of the counter-press is more about preventing teams from counter-attacking them, before rebuilding their own attacks as their options to counter in a similar manner to Dortmund are limited due to the more cautious approach of their opponents.

Pressing triggers

Klopp has developed his teams pressing triggers, looking back at old games of Dortmund you can see they set up in a mid-block in a 4-4-1-1 formation. The two forwards used cover shadows to prevent the opposition from passing the ball into the midfield. One of Dortmund’s big strengths was the willingness of the wingers to track. Allowing Dortmund to outnumber the ball-carrier near the sideline stopping the opposition’s attack.

Dortmund prevented the opposition from playing any penetrative passes and started their press with certain triggers. A bad pass, miscontrol of the ball or a closed body shape of a receiving player meant that Dortmund’s players started to press the ball-carrier and shut down all short passing options. If the opposition played backwards to reset their attack, Dortmund would not necessarily continue their press.

This is the first major difference as Liverpool continue their press hunting the ball all the way back to the opponent’s keeper. Liverpool’s press has become more proactive and smarter, they will often use the midblock to set their own pressing traps such as horizontal passes.

he Liverpool press starts higher than Dortmunds. Unlike Dortmund Liverpool use horizontal passes as a trigger to press. This enables the wingers to start the press forcing the centre-back to play the ball back inside. This reduces the width of the opposition build-up play. Obviously, this changed pressing approach also required a change of the setup. In the 4-3-3. The wingers press the centre-back forcing the opposition build-up into central areas. With Liverpool using their own cover shadows similar to Dortmund.

Recreating Klopp tactic in FM21

Dortmund use a 4-2-3-1 as their base formation which can then transfer to the 4-4-1-1 in defence or the 4-2-4 in attack. Klopp liked to use the double pivot with a DLP sitting alongside a more solid midfielder destroyer.

With the ball

Dortmund would build from the back, the keeper would look to pass the ball into hummels who was especially important as he could either play the ball into Gundagon or if teams marked him he could step out of defence to initiate attacks with his range of passing.

The DLP if afforded time and space could hit long diagonal passes into the channels or up to the striker, allowing the team to advance up the pitch as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The keeper can also go long to exploit any gaps for the forward players to run into.

With the ball Dortmunds primary aim was to play fast direct passes into the opponents third trying to unsettle them through their high intensity play. Dortmunds strength was in the central areas with the wingbacks being tasked with bombing up and down to provide the width. With Reus in the team Schmelzer was tasked with being more attacking than he previously used to. The front 3 were all instructed tp freely roam to create space for one another, often Gotze would be out wide whilst Reus attacked inside with his pace.

In Transition

Dortmund looked to play on the front foot and this was facilitated by trying to win the ball high up the pitch with a counter-press. This then allowed them to counter quickly and they often scored most of their goals through these transitions,

In Defence

Without the ball Dortomund played a higher defensive line to remain compact and also allow them to press their opponents into submission. Although they looked to press high to win the ball back early they actually sprung their press from a midblock waiting for a pressing trigger before initiating their press. They looked to swarm and overwhelm opponents in the wide areas through their compact shape. Using the touchline as an extra pressing man meant the opponent had to play more risky passes or give up possession in dangerous areas. In game I would defend wider to replicate this then switch to a more narrow width when closing out the game.

The Results

I was able to replicate the domestic double success winning the league easily, Haaland was comfortably the top scorer in the league showing the effectiveness of the counterpress.

Football Manager 2020 Tactics - Lucien Favre

Dortmund Overview

Prior to the arrival of Favre in the 2018/19 season, Dortmund went through a period of transition. Having parted company with coach Thomas Tuchel at the end of the 2016/17 season their search for a new coach led to them appointing the former Ajax coach Peter Bosz. The Dutchman, however, did not last long in Dortmund and he was replaced by the Austrian coach Peter Stoger. Neither coach captured the imagination of the passionate Dortmund support and the club was lucky to finish fourth in a Champions League qualification spot. Prior to the appointment of Bosz, however, the clubs first choice had been the former Borussia Monchengladbach coach Lucien Favre.

Last season, Borussia Dortmund accumulated 76 points over the course of 34 games, playing the tried and tested 4-2-3-1 formation. But for whatever reason, this season the 4-2-3-1 was just not working. The first half of the season saw some troubling times for Favre and his team, as they ended up drawing far too many games. With defensive issues abound like never before under his reign, Favre knew he needed to change something and it was clear that simple personnel tweaks weren’t making a big enough impact. Instead, the French manager tweaked the formation, changing his tried and tested 4-2-3-1 into a fluid and creative 3-4-2-1.

Under Favre, it is the defensive phase that looks the most complete and effective. Gone are the days of gegenpressing (counter-pressing) that Dortmund utilised so effectively under their former coach Jurgen Klopp and instead Favre has installed a more structured defensive approach with a medium block looking to only press the opposition situationally, when they make an error in their build-up or when they enter the Dortmund half of the field.

Once again there are real differences in the way that Dortmund look to transition from defence to attack under Favre when compared with their successful spell under Klopp and Tuchel. Under Klopp, in particular, Dortmund were noted for their rapid transitions from defence to attack, they moved the ball quickly and used the pace of their forwards to stretch the opposition defensive structure before it got a chance to fully develop.

To go along with the more nuanced and passive defensive structure that Dortmund are using under Favre they are also more measured with the way that they transition into the attacking phase.

Favre's Dortmund Tactic

Dortmund is famously a team who love to attack. They are not necessarily known for their defensive fortitude and more than anything else, their failures in defence were the main reason why they lost the title last season by two points. However, in the 3-4-2-1, Dortmund has been able to close the space more quickly and look less susceptible to defensive errors. The back three quickly become a back five out of possession, with Witsel and Can/Brandt remaining compact in central areas. With Erling Haaland in the lineup, Jadon Sancho and Thorgan Hazard seem to come back more frequently to join what is very much a 5-4-1.
