As the first and, so far, only 3D The Legend of Zelda sequel released, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask exists with the uniquely impossible task of following up the herculean The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, widely considered one of the best games ever made. The follow-up explores a darker side of Nintendo’s famous adventure series, abandoning the triumphant land of Hyrule for its deeply disturbed neighbor, Termina.
With a host of reusable assets ready for use after completing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, development on its sequel only took about a year. However, a short production cycle did not keep the talented minds behind the game from completely changing the prior game’s conventions. Like most of its siblings, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is an incredibly unique entry within its series in every sense.
Gameplay in particular is all new. In The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, rather than one gauntlet of dungeons and items after the other, you’ll hunt for masks to slowly unravel a small, dense world. Throughout the game, you’ll embark on quest after quest to collect these magical masks. When worn, they transform Link’s appearance and grant him new abilities. The world of Termina seems a bit smaller than you’re used to seeing in a The Legend of Zelda game, but it is teeming with secrets, hidden pathways, and abnormalities that can be fully explored with different masks. On top of this, thanks to the necessity to reset time every three days in order to avoid certain doom, tasks must be strategically approached so that they are completed within three-day time limits. Trading a few dungeons for masks and time limits creates a uniquely segmented adventure. The gameplay as a whole is a wonderful new direction stemming from one of the best games ever made.
