Spells, powers or active abilities that directly decrease the attack speed of enemies, include:

Also, there are many ways for characters to put an affliction on foes, which in turn reduces those enemies' attack speed:

Recovery speed

Recovery speed refers to the duration (ie. recovery time) between the end of one character action and the first moment the next action can be performed. This does not include the duration of the actions.

Pillars of Eternity primarily uses the term recovery speed - a rate of change over time, while Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire uses the term recovery time, meaning the duration - though they work the same mechanically.

Buffs [ ]

Besides buffing up dexterity, there are various ways to further increase attack speed directly.

A character's attack speed for a given kind of attack can benefit from the following at the same time:

Weapon Attacks [ ]

Animation durations are rounded up, resulting in additional

0.1 second delays (up to 0.5 seconds for reload times).

Dual wielding gives a 50% recovery time reduction. All attack speed buffs similarly only modify the recovery time (as opposed to action speed, which modifies everything, and reload speed).

Dexterity [ ]

For each point of Dexterity above 10, the speed of all of the character's attacks is increased by 3% (additive, not multiplicative):

Attcking, drinking a potion, casting a spell. -50% is harm. Anyone know how dex interacts with recovery speed?

Say i'm in plate with 24% dex bonus.

Which of the following is correct?

1. 1.50 - .24 = 1.26
2. 1.50 * (1-.24) = 1.14
3. something else?

Yup, as you said recovery speed dictates the time between attacks. However, higher -X% recovery speed means longer time between attacks. Yup, as you said recovery speed dictates the time between attacks. However, higher -X% recovery speed means longer time between attacks. I just tested -35% v. -50% and the -50% took about half a second longer before attack animation. Oh, I might have gotten the recovery time percentage around the wrong way then, negative numbers must increase recovery time. Armour will always increase recovery time and I just had a look and armour always has its recovery time modifier as a negative value.

Kinda confusing, actually. I never actually noticed the number I just always remembered the intent with armour modifying it and always knew it would slow you down. Never actually noticed that it was a negative number until just now.

It's really not that confusing, the -50% isn't to recovery TIME. It's to recovery SPEED.

So instead of recovering at 50 miles per hour, you're recovering at 25 miles per hour, slower.

Armor reduces the rate at which that recovery bar depletes. The bar will obviously last longer if you are depleting it slower.

Attack has 5.0 second recovery time.
Recovery speed is +1.0 per second, recovery completes in 5 seconds
Armor would reduce that to +0.5 per second, recovery completes in 10 seconds.

Recovery is the amount of time that a character spends between actions. Longer actions result in proportionally longer Recovery. Armor also have a large effect on Recovery. Generally, heavier armor inflicts longer Recovery penalties.
