Crowns are Awards (not a physical item) in Monster Hunter World (MHW) for successfully hunting monsters of the largest and smallest sizes of each species.

How to earn a crown
Available crowns are miniature (gold), (giant) silver, and giant (gold); for hunting the smallest, next to largest, and largest possible size respectively. The crown will be awarded on the summary page upon either returning from the hunt or claiming rewards from the handler on an expedition. If a crown-sized monster is successfully hunted, the rest of the hunt can be failed or withdrawn from (not abandoned) and you will still get the crown upon returning. Special rewards do not have to be available for the request for you to get the crown.

Ah, the time has come again for you to get on all fours and pray to the Almighty RNGesus. He who decides your sanity and determine if you are worthy of his Grace in your journey of ascribing your self-worth to meaningless virtual achievements. Are you ready to indulge in a sizeism game of extreme patience and perseverance as you size-discriminate every monster?
This guide is essentially a compiled list of all the information I had relied on and used on my crowns journey and I hope it proves useful on yours.
Good Luck Hunters, and May the RNG be With You.

Crown monsters are the largest and smallest of each species. After completing Low Rank, these crowns can be found in almost any types of quest: Investigations, Optionals*, Expeditions, Arenas, SOSes, Guiding Lands and Events (except in Assigned quests, as they have a fixed size throughout the story's progression).
*Note: In the base game: World, optional quests do not spawn crowns.
Based on a fellow hunter's datamined research, HR investigations with at least 1 gold and 1 silver, 3 gold and 1 bronze, and tempered investigations with 3 purple boxes have a 6% chance for a mini crown and a 3% for a large crown.
Investigations with 4/5 gold or purple boxes have slightly better odds at spawning large crowns, with a 6% chance for a large crown and the same 6% for a mini crown.
I would recommend avoid doing regular quests like Optionals, as they have the lowest chance of crowns spawning: 2% for a mini and 1% for a large. Certain event quests are where you would want to put your zenny on. Some of these event quests have guaranteed chances of spawning crowns and many others have an increased 12% chance for both sizes.
More detailed information will be elaborated in the next few sections and other useful research and sources can be found in References.
Crown Sniping
These monsters are typically about 25% different in size from average. I highly recommend measuring monsters for crowns instead of just blindly farming them, which can burn you out quicker than Lunastra's supernova. Simply bring along a few shock traps and your Ghillie Mantle and you can start crown sniping.
With the back leg at a 90° angle, these points (the hock and tibialis anterior– animal anatomy 101) are commonly used as references in measurements against your player's head or chest. For a better visual, check out Youtuber Gaming with Abyss.
Dry spells are fairly common, but just trust your instincts; you ought to be able to tell if the monster is larger or smaller than usual after 666 hours of gameplay. Also, you do not have to kill all the monsters in a quest. If the crown-sized monster is successfully hunted, the rest of the quest can be failed or withdrawn from (not abandoned) and you will still get the crown upon returning.
Additionally, depending on your gaming morals, sinners others might suggest save scumming to stretch out your finite quality investigations while you crown snipe. But fair warning, RNGesus would not be pleased.
In a quest, there are about 35-38 sizes that a monster can spawn in, and each size has its own probability. A monster from quality investigations and increased crown events has 6 crown sizes that it can spawn in; 3 miniature and 3 large, with the event quests having higher crown chances.
Monsters marked with ✨ have guaranteed giant/mini crown spawns in certain quests. Refer to the next section for more information.
Critical Bounties
Many critical bounties exist for capturing specific endemic creatures for special rewards. Some require you to capture rare or gold crown life, so it is recommended to acquire this bounty prior to actively hunting for one; the following are those bounties.

Endemic Life
With the Iceborne update, players can obtain miniature and gold crowns for capturing endemic life or as a potential reward for pawswapping with Grimalkynes. When placing pets in your house, you can decide if you want to place miniature, regular, or gold crown sized pets. Incidentally, this is the only way to tell how many crown-sized specimens you have. If you frighten an animal away, many of them will come back if you wander a little ways away from the spot; be careful not to go too far or it'll spawn a new one.
Unlike obtaining a crown from a large monster, the player will be notified every time an endemic capture is of crown size. No silver crowns are awarded for endemic life and no crowns of any type are awarded for "great size" fish (in fact, you are never shown their size). Any animals caught prior to the Iceborne update will be "regular" sized and the smallest/largest slots will be marked as average size of that creature. Endemic life crown sizes are not necessarily absolute, but rather within a percentage of the min/max size. For example, you may capture a gold crown creature, only to capture one later that is slightly larger; thereby updating your gold crown size. In contrast, large monster crown sizes are absolute, outside of special quests that spawn them outside their typical ranges.
* Always same size
1 Spawn not guaranteed
2 Unusually low chance of spawning a crown
Several food skills exist that can greatly increase your chance of successfully capturing specific endemic life
