New Splash [2]

Good morning! Today I found a new splash in Pocket Edition 0.8.1. It says "Jason! Jason! Jason!" I don't see any mentions of that in the article. So, thank you for listening! 92.242.75.66 07:07, 23 February 2014 (UTC)

Minecraft 2.0 APRIL FOOLS

The big pink APRIL FOOLS! splash is a Special splash , even though it is not from an real version of the game should it me noted? I hold the PCGamer Demo splash to help my case (demo version splash). -- KnightMiner ( talk | contribs ) 22:17, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

The 1.8.5 line has incorrect math and a wrong number.

Read the title. 108.210.218.70 19:00, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

I think it's right. 1 added, 1 changed, 1 removed = same total as before. Also it's counting just normal splashes, not special splashes like the Notch ones that got removed. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless t / c 19:11, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Matt Damon

The "Matt Damon" splash, like the "Peter Griffin" splash, is a fairly obvious reference to the appearance of the stylized letter "A" in the MINECRAFT logo on the splash screen (the "hole" in the "A" is formed by a creeper face). The splash text is plastered at an angle across the logo, just underneath the "A". As such, the small facial image that bears a striking resemblance to both Peter Griffin's fat face and Matt Damon's rather rectangular head appears as if it is "titled" by the splash text. The supposed "Team America" movie reference is an absurd grasp at straws--the humor of the text lies in the fact that the letter looks like a caricature of Peter Griffin or Matt Damon.

- 99.61.188.221 16:45, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Well, you could easily turn that idea on its head: the devs commonly use memorable / quotable lines from movies / music / memes, so the "Team America" reference is a perfect fit; whereas the idea that the "A" looks like Peter Griffin or Matt Damon is an absurd grasp at straws -- on the grounds that it doesn't bear any resemblance to those guys whatsoever. – Sealbudsman (Aaron) frameless T / C 17:19, 18 August 2015 (UTC) In your opinion. While it is certainly a possibility that you are correct, I'm quite certain that if one were to take a poll of those Minecraft users who actually pay attention to splash screen text, the vast majority would indicate that the first time they read "Matt Damon" or "Peter Griffin", they instantly noticed the resemblance of the logo's stylized letter "A" to those characters. Conversely, I'd imagine that very few of the polled users would make the jump to this "Team America" reference. How is "Peter Griffin" a 'memorable' or 'quotable' line from a movie, music or meme? Indeed, is simply dropping the name of a beloved pop culture character onto the Minecraft splash screen enough to be entertaining in and of itself? Is it your assertion that the developers, who were clever and sophisticated enough to include such amusing snippets as "That's Numberwang", "Turing complete" and "20 GOTO 10", wanted to include "Peter Griffin" just "because"? I put it to you that that notion is absurd. Frankly, some things are simply so obvious that they defy easy explanation. - 99.61.188.221 18:19, 21 August 2015 (UTC) The notion, on my part, of supposing they would write it "just because" isn't the absurd thing: the act, on the devs' part, of writing it "just because" would be the absurd thing – and an action being absurd has never stopped anybody from doing that thing. A team of developers certainly can at times be highly witty and at times highly absurd, but to suppose that this can happen isn't itself absurd. I can't rule it out. I'm not sure why there need to be imaginary polls and strong assertions of obviousness. All I meant to say is, I just don't see what you're seeing, so I see the other interpretation as more likely. I recognize this whole matter hinges on a matter of people's particular pareidolia, so I'm going to leave this discussion at that. Sorry for escalating. – Sealbudsman talk / contr 19:24, 21 August 2015 (UTC)

Splash Documents

Is it possible that we could include the documents that come with Minecraft that have the splashes? That way people could see the proof and have a list for themselves.

I have the splash document for PE. Could we include the Console and PC ones if we can get access to them?

LCSKID ( talk ) 18:47, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Do you mean the file from the game that defines the splashes? The lead text of the article says that "The splashes are defined in a plain-text file within the Minecraft .jar file (versions/(Minecraft version)/(Minecraft version).jar/assets/minecraft/texts/splashes.txt)". It would probably be useful to put on the page, how to access the PE one, and how to access the console ones. – Sealbudsman talk / contr 19:58, 22 July 2016 (UTC)

Terraria link

The Terraria link on splash 240 (Also try Terraria) goes to the Fandom Terraria wiki. It would probably be better to switch it to the gamepedia wiki (or, the official wiki,) given that it uses the same service as this wiki, and it is more widely used and has more information. Sounds reasonable, it's the official wiki. Done. – Sealbudsman talk / contr 20:31, 27 December 2016 (UTC) Or we could use a link to the Terraria website. - Luke18033 ( talk ) 21:25, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Undocumented Splash

Maybe the undocumented splash are a reference to the fact that Minecraft Code is undocumented or bad documented, Minecraft does not follow the proper rules for a good documentation (Example: Don't have a javadoc, in some parts have comments in others not, etc)-- Autopoietico 10:20, 04 February 2014 (UTC)

It most likely refers to the fact that there is (or, rather, was; the splash was added in Indev , predating the formation of Mojang and an assortment of other milestones) no official documentation for gameplay and in-game mechanics. It doesn't matter, though; without a comment directly from Notch, we can't say anything about it since it's too generic to draw any solid conclusions about. 「 ディノ 奴 千?! 」 ? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 12:38, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

Console Edition loading-screen messages

The Console Edition has these messages that appear on the loading screen. They're randomized like splashes, which is why I put this on the talk page here. My question is, why don't we have a page for these? - Luke18033 ( talk ) 18:40, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

This is good for Realms.

It's very clearly a joke on how for a long time the Bitcoin community always claimed everything was good for bitcoin. Specifically, the phrase "This is good for Bitcoin" is sort of a meme within communities related to bitcoin. I don't wish to waste anyone from Mojang's time reaffirming an obvious reference, yet the comments on the editing page say that they NEED to be sourced. Is this a "no exceptions" kind of rule or is it just one to avoid stupid descriptions? Actioninja ( talk ) 04:36, 1 February 2015 (UTC)

Its only illegal to sell it in Finland. Using / importing it to own use is not illegal.

I think the former tweet is enough for it to be worth mentioning as a meme, but a re-tweet hardly seems like enough to say that the splash is referencing it. It could have been added simply as the meme. – KnightMiner t / c 20:57, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

343-348

Isn't the lines no. 343 to 348 a reference to Stevie Wonder's 'Skeletons' song. It has similar lines from the song.

Do not add a description

Why do we need references to Mojang for all splashes which are not currently described? Specifically, the “Getting ready to <verb> !” splashes clearly reference the lyrics to Skeletons by Stevie Wonder . — F‌enhl 05:58, 3 September 2014 (UTC)

The primary reason I know of is to avoid speculation. Plus, on several occasions the "obvious" meaning was later confirmed by mojang to be false. -- KnightMiner ( t | c ) 13:21, 3 September 2014 (UTC) For most splashes, it seems highly unlikely that we will ever have an official word on what the intended meaning is, so until then an explanation based on a likely assumption seems appropriate to me. We could add references for confirmed meanings to differentiate them from those which have not been confirmed, and if there is any dispute, it could be removed entirely. — F‌enhl 00:38, 5 September 2014 (UTC)

"It swings, it jives!" reference

I find it quite probable that "It swings, it jives!" is an allusion to the Queen piece "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". To positively add to my argument, I present a sample of the lyrical content:

It swings / It jives / It shakes all over like a jelly fish / I kinda like it / Crazy little thing called love

I look forward to my points being taken into at-least-plausible consideration.

Changing Splash Text: HISTORY - You HAVE to use packs, right? But originally you couldn't?

I thought this would be in the history section (down at the very bottom). Shouldn't it be? Is this true?

  • Originally splash text could be personalized by going into Minecraft's programming (not using a texture pack or resource pack). Only an update would probably erase the changes you had made (I'm guessing).
  • Now (1.8) you cannot personalize the splash text that way, you have to use a texture/resource pack. This is because when you start the game, if it can connect to the internet, it will over-write what you changed. Even if there's no new update being applied. Any changes you make outside of the proper folders (resource packs, mods, screenshots, and saves) will be "fixed" back to default. My understanding was that at some point Minecraft cleaned up the likely-hood of user-created-bugs being reported as Minecraft bugs, by forcing Minecraft to check for changes to it's programming and revert them. They only wanted changes to happen in the proper folders, to keep things simple.

Is this accurate? At what version did this happen? I read that you could change the splash text in the jar file of Minecraft, and I was thinking it was wrong. (I mean, you can, if you then also keep it from connecting to the internet, but that's not what they implied.) I figured they must be talking about a much older version. But I was curious if maybe you CAN also change the splash text within Minecraft itself. Maybe it doesn't overwrite that part? Anyone know? If so, can you add it down to the changes made in each version history chart thingy? Thanks 50.181.85.8 00:28, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

That happened way back at the introduction of the new launcher. And it can still be accomplished provided you use a different version name then the default. -- KnightMiner ( t | c ) 03:19, 26 September 2014 (UTC)

14 new splashes with 14w25a

The last two days I investigated the new splashes for the German Minecraft Wiki. They are all from songs - some from funk songs, some from the 1980s. Even if my explanations are in german, you can easily get the song title and interpreter from the German Wiki. Best regards -- Sumpfhütte 93.214.243.85 14:35, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

"Skeleton" Splash

- This is obviously a reference to the creepypasta named "Then a Skeleton Popped out" which was a joke pasta that made fun of "serious" creepypastas.

Rise from your grave splash

How do you know it's a reference to that, and not something else? -- Orthotope talk 16:18, 17 May 2014 (UTC) To be fair, I'd much rather just remove most of the unsourced "obvious" explanations that are already on the list because we don't have an official source confirming them as correct, especially since there's been at least one case of such an explanation being confirmed as wrong by either a mojangsta or someone else in a position to know. We keep telling people to ask a mojangsta directly so we can get a source for this stuff, but no one ever does. =/ 「 ディノ 奴 千?! 」 ? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 16:22, 17 May 2014 (UTC)

The Creator of Optifine sp614x explains the 1.8 Lag Source

My first few game engine attempts had this problem. I would allocate new objects all the time, for everything. All position vectors were immutable, because separation of concerns, information hiding, encapsulation, that was all taught to me as good. It was taught that that is the correct way of making large, object oriented software systems. I was taught that I could just allocate new objects, let the old ones float away and get scooped up by the garbage collector. And for a while, everything was beautiful. Entity lists would grow with new entities and dead entities could be simply trimmed out of the list.

When he said that they replaced the coordinate points with an immutable BlockPos which must be reallocated and the old one discarded whenever a different coordinate was desired, I thought to myself "Just like I used to do. Same shit my professors taught me." This is not a good idea AT ALL for real time applications.

This is not a good idea AT ALL for real time applications.

This is the key right here.

The techniques taught in programming classes are correct. for some applications. Even most applications in the world of software design, arguably. However, real-time applications are a niche area with completely different approaches and constraints. And video-games are basically real-time applications.

It seems like programming education needs to have more of a focus on real-time design, and how it differs from the "standard" software engineering approaches.

Sometimes I think that people are seriously overdoing abstractions, immutability and all these newfangled software design principles and end up overlooking the steaming pile of shit they hide between layers of code and garbage. /rant

For those wanting a more technical background:

The (performance) problem with OOP is that it encourages designing around the single instance (uncommon case.) Instead you should be doing .

. Data Oriented Design (DOD) (also called DDD Data Driven Design) which solves this performance issue by designing around the multiple instances (common case.)

Edit: Fixed grammar, added link to OOP vs DOD.

Have I gotten a good overview of things?

Oh how I wish I could understand this properly.

When 1.8 is lagging and stuttering the garbage collector is working like crazy and is doing work which has nothing to do with the game itself (rendering, running the internal server, loading chunks, etc). Instead it is constantly cleaning the mess behind the code which thinks that memory allocation is "cheap".

Their comments related to garbage collection are not really correct. Allocation rate is still something to be wary of but only because it might imply that you just have some strange bug or are being gratuitously wasteful (like their odd "parameters in containers" approach - although I suppose this is for some other beneficial purpose). Depending on what you are doing with your buffers, it usually is a better idea to not reuse them since live objects hurt you more than allocation (in most cases).

Adding more cores does not help as GC is mostly a serial process

This is wrong in almost all object graph shapes. GC typically benefits from more cores, up to the limit of your memory bandwidth (and the collector often improves your use of existing bandwidth).

This will decrase the time between the garbage collections (20 sec instead of 4), but it will also increase the garbage collection time by 4

Mmmph, mmph! Splash

I was playing pocket edition. And I saw that a splash was not on the page. It was "haha, LEL!" I don't know if it is a typo or not. Should someone put this on the list? I don't have a screenshot.-- 50.179.210.46 14:36, 14 July 2014 (UTC)
