In this tutorial you will find steps to make x360ce work with Subnautica. This method also works with any game – just do the same easy steps, no special skills needed to make any controller work as an Xbox 360 gamepad. Emulator allows your controller (joystick, wheel, gamepad, etc.) to operate as the most common device, recognized by most of the games without any additional settings and workarounds.

1. The first step is to download x360ce zip file from official site. You have to select 32 or 64 bit version (same as the version of Subnautica you use). If you don’t know the version of your game or download wrong one accidentally, you will be notified later and have a chance to use another version.

2. Now we have to find the installation folder of your game. You can easily do this by looking into game shortcut settings or finding the game in your Steam library list. If you choose the Steam variant, right click the game name and select “Properties”.

3. Navigate to “Local files” tab and press “Browse local files. ” button.

4. Now you need to find the folder with Subnautica executable. In the example picture they are located in Binaries / Retail subfolder. You need to extract downloaded x360ce ZIP file to folder with your game executable file.

5. Click on x360ce exe file with the right mouse button and select “Run as administrator” from dropdown menu.

6. You will see window with warning – “xinput 1_3.dll was not found. This file is required for emulator to function properly.” Don’t worry, just click “Create” button to make them appear.

7. When x360ce will inform you that new device was detected, use automatic search for settings from internet – just hit “Next” button.

8. Click “Finish”, when installation completed.

9. Hit the “Auto” button to make all settings set to defaults. Confirm changes by clicking “Yes” in popup window. All the buttons will be filled automatically.

10. Now just hit “Save” button to make all your settings saved. You can also change buttons assignment before hitting “Save”, if you like.

Now you can normally launch Subnautica and use your controller with x360ce emulator – it will be starting automatically with each game launch.

Didn't need to install anything as support is inbuilt in windows. It worked without drivers on both windows 7 and 10 with my games. Skipped 8 for whole lot reasons. The game even exist on real XBOX. Mine has been acting up lately, with the green light circle always flashing and I can't get it to acknowledge my IR receiver. Is there something wrong with the controller? SBPM is now capable of filling the role of software like x360ce/DS4Windows and others by offering emulation options, so for instance a PS4 controller can now be used in XInput-only games, using their new built-in DirectInput > XInput emulator. The problem is this emulation is new and buggy and may cause problems with games that already have native support for your controller. This can be fixed by turning it off unless you explicitly need it for your game/controller combo.

If that's not the cause, you can try the normal button/axis calibration in Windows by opening start and typing "controller", which should autocomplete to an applet named "Set up USB game controllers". In there, you can access the properties, and if available, calibration options for pretty much any gamepad, joystick, HOTAS that is installed. This will at least let you see that windows recognizes the device and all it's buttons/axes correctly.

Subnautica does not have motion controls as far as I know

As noted on the store page, there is no support for motion controllers and as of today has a bright message indicating "The VR mode for this game requires the use of a gamepad or a keyboard and mouse".

The animations are good, graphics are great (the game is freaking gorgeous!), the rewards good and the terrors are real! You will crap your pants!

ps: never use the controller to turn, stand up and use your head and body.

Tried Big Picture mode on Steam?

I use an Xbone controller, in the Subnautica options menu under controls there was an "enable controller" option. Click that box and it should work immediately.

Xbox works good. I use a Logitech F710 wireless controller. It has the design of a Playstation controller with the buttons of an Xbox controller.

It always just works. No fooling around with anything. Plus if you play a game on the Xbox or PS4. Then play the same game on the PC with an F710 controller. The button layout is exactly the same.
