Implicit modifiers

Corrupted modifiers are implicit.

Corrupted modifiers will remove an implicit modifier from an item and replace it with the corrupted modifier.

Gilded fossils give items an implicit that says item sells for much more to vendors . Items that normally have 1 implicit modifier on them will have 2 implicit modifiers when crafted with a gilded fossil. When corrupting these 2 implicit items, there is a chance that the corrupted implicit will replace the vendor implicit. Because the vendor implicit is not useful (except for selling to vendors), adding it to an item will give it the potential to keep a useful implicit modifier while corrupted. This means items with 1 base implicit have the potential to be stronger when using a gilded fossil on them before corrupting them.

Vaal Orbs are a currency that can be used on an a gear to make it "corrupt", which modifies it in a random way and leaves the item unable to be used for further crafting. The corruption varies between a good, neutral or bad effect being added to the item, and for a list of those check the PoE Wiki.

You can also use a vaal orb on a gem for a chance of improving it. The desired effects are an increase in the level cap of the gem by 1, or the quality by 3, but the corruption can also make the gem worse. A different type of corrupt gem is a Vaal one, and these are modified (and generally more powerful) versions of the base gems that requires you to kill monsters to charge them before they can be used.

Basically vaaling an item is a high risk high reward action that can add value onto an already good item, have almost no effect, or ruin an item entirely. The ideal outcomes are usually getting a good implicit for your item, like an amulet can get +1 curses on enemies, or chest armor can get +1 to level of all slotted gems. Sometimes you corrupt and item and nothing happens. this sometimes decreases the value of the item a bit, since you can no longer craft on it AND you no longer have a chance to vaal it for a good outcome, since it failed already.
