Dungeon denizens

The depths are inhabited by Dark Iron dwarves, their demonic bloodhound pets, their golem creations, and their fire elemental allies. There is also a contingent of Twilight's Hammer ambassadors inside the city and the detention block area. The dwarves in the Depths consist primarily of warrior and priest types with a handful of paladins. Outside Shadowforge City, the dwarves are all elite. Inside the city, one can find groups of two to three elite dwarves and Twilight cultists surrounded by a cadre of non-elite citizens. Some other humanoid races appear in the city and in the Ring of Law event.

The demonic bloodhounds in the Depths are renowned for their ability to sniff out stealthed rogues and druids. They will sometimes appear as a separate pack of three, and sometimes included in a group patrolling alongside a dwarf. All of the dogs are non-elite, but their damage capability in large numbers is not to be underestimated. The golems and fire elementals in the Depths generally fit the stereotypes of their types. The golems are strong and well-armored melee attackers, though some exceptional specimens have the ability to release single-target or area-of-effect fire spells. The fire elementals dish out large amounts of fire damage with melee attacks and ranged fire spells.

Blackrock Depths bosses

The Anvilrage Military are not to be underestimated either, particularly the Officers (who have Divine Shield) and the Medics who can heal their troops. Even for a lesser-geared level 70, they can be dangerous in large groups.

BRD is not visited as often these days since many players prefer to go to Outland at level 58 (the rewards for Outland's initial quests render BRD's gear obsolete). Farming for Fiery Weapon enchanting recipe may still be useful, since it is commonly used by low-level players.

In Wrath of the Lich King, BRD attracted more interest due to the instance-clearing achievement; and the introduction of Jeeves, which requires Field Repair Bot 74A (which is learned in BRD).

The instance is also almost entirely soloable (for Rogues or Hunters, at least, and probably most melee classes) by about tier 5 (level 70), although it is not economically efficient to do so. Although there is money to be made here (especially for miners), the sheer size of the instance and the comparatively low level of the mobs mean that there are better instances for farming (notably Scholomance). For level 80, this instance is easily soloable. Fire mages may still have harder time than Warriors with Bladestorm, for example.

Although it is not especially profitable, BRD (and the rest of the Blackrock Mountain complex) is well worth at least one visit. These instances represented the original game's end-game content, and were made with a high level of quality.

The Wowhead Client is a little application we use to keep our database up to date, and to provide you with some nifty extra functionality on the website!

It serves 2 main purposes:

It maintains a WoW addon called the Wowhead Looter, which collects data as you play the game! It uploads the collected data to Wowhead in order to keep the database up-to-date!

You can also use it to keep track of your completed quests, recipes, mounts, companion pets, and titles!

History

From World Dungeons on the old WoW site:

Once the capital city of the Dark Iron dwarves, this volcanic labyrinth now serves as the seat of power for Ragnaros the Firelord. Ragnaros has uncovered the secret to creating life from stone and plans to build an army of unstoppable golems to aid him in conquering the whole of Blackrock Mountain. Obsessed with defeating Nefarian and his draconic minions, Ragnaros will go to any extreme to achieve final victory.

Dungeon Finder

Queuing for randoms in Dungeon Finder can either drop you in the Detention Block (Lower City) or Upper City. If you are unfamiliar with the two areas, you may be able to determine your location based on your fellow party members: if you have someone below level 51 in the group, you are in Detention Block; if you have someone above level 57, you are in the upper City.

Quests

Blackrock Depths

High Interrogator Gerstahn – The Twilight's Hammer cultist Gerstahn has always indulged in life's finer things: exotic foods, fine clothes, and gem-encrusted torture tools. Day and night, her prisoners' bloodcurdling cries echo throughout the Dark Iron clan's infamous Detention Block. Gerstahn proudly calls this horrific noise her symphony of screams, and she is always eager to add another voice to the chorus.

Lord Roccor – Lord Roccor loathes the scheming and backstabbing of his fellow fire elementals. To avoid serving alongside his kind in the Molten Core, the mighty being purposefully angered the Firelord. Roccor's risky gambit paid off: he was expelled from the core and forced to guard Blackrock Depths in isolation.

Houndmaster Grebmar – Grebmar Fleabeard's hounds are the only family he's ever known. Long ago, the orphaned dwarf began breeding canines to serve as companions and guard dogs. When the houndmaster isn't patrolling Blackrock Depths with his loyal beasts, he often treats them to the Grim Guzzler's finest Dark Iron ale.

Ring of Law – There is only one punishment for crimes committed against the Dark Iron dwarves: death. Ancient tradition calls for the guilty to pay the blood price in the Ring of the Law by battling savage creatures gathered from across Azeroth. To date, it is unknown if anyone has ever survived this brutal crucible.

Pyromancer Loregrain – Once a respected member of the Earthen Ring, Loregrain joined the Twilight's Hammer cult for reasons that remain a mystery to his former allies. He eventually journeyed to Blackrock Depths, where he took a sudden interest in the famed Dark Iron architect Franclorn Forgewright. The purpose of his current obsession is unclear, but Loregrain remains loyal to his cult and an enemy of all who oppose it.

Lord Incendius – Baron Geddon taught Incendius to harness his destructive powers, but the baron never expected his protege to grow so lethally efficient. Increasingly wary that Incendius might usurp him, Geddon sent the blazing elemental out of the Molten Core to guard the Dark Iron dwarves' fabled Black Anvil.

Warder Stilgiss – After years of dedication to Emperor Thaurissan, the cunning mage Stilgiss was entrusted with protecting his clan's coffers in the Black Vault. The loyal dwarf's close friend Houndmaster Grebmar celebrated the occasion by gifting one of his vicious dogs--Verek--to Stilgiss. The mage has put the beast to good use, keeping it at his side to scare off the vault's would-be thieves.

Fineous Darkvire – Chief Architect Fineous Darkvire earned his title by passing off the ideas of more gifted masons as his own. His arrogance and scheming have drawn the ire of his predecessor, Franclorn Forgewright, from beyond the grave. The ghost of the late chief architect seeks to reclaim his incredibly powerful hammer--Ironfel--from Darkvire before it can be used for ill.

Bael'Gar – The monstrous molten giant Bael'Gar lumbers across the Dark Iron Highway, a stunning feat of dwarven engineering carved into Blackrock Depths. Ragnaros pulled the giant from the heart of the Firelands to guard a massive sealed door at one end of the highway. According to legend, only the Firelord and the Dark Iron clan's highest-ranking members know what lies beyond the mysterious gate.

General Angerforge – Through a lifetime of study, General Angerforge has become an expert on dwarven military history and tactics. He recently incurred Emperor Dagran Thaurissan's fury by writing a scathing treatise on his clan's failures in past conflicts. This political blunder aside, Angerforge is a Dark Iron to his core. He will bleed--and die, if necessary--to protect his people and his emperor.

Golem Lord Argelmach – Argelmach's lifelong obsession with immortality drove him to forge enchanted constructs in his own image. Rumor has it that he has also dabbled in some form of black magic that would allow the golem lord's new creations to act as vessels for his spirit should his flesh-and-blood body be destroyed.

Hurley Blackbreath – To say Blackbreath is a regular at the Grim Guzzler would be something of an understatement. In over a decade, the mischievous drunkard has left the tavern only once to steal a top-secret recipe for Thunderbrew Lager. Blackbreath has occasionally sobered up enough to make the concoction himself, and he claims it grants unimaginable strength and courage.

Phalanx – Until recently, drunken brawls raged within the Grim Guzzler on an almost daily basis. Barkeep Plugger Spazzring has reduced the frequency of these scuffles with Phalanx, a mighty golem bouncer programmed to maintain order in the tavern and eliminate raucous patrons with extreme force.

Plugger Spazzring – They say that at the Grim Guzzler everyone knows your name. This sense of camaraderie is due to the hard work of Spazzring, a leper gnome who sought a new life in Blackrock Depths after the fall of Gnomeregan. Despite his history of dabbling with evil as a warlock, he takes pride in his job as the tavern's barkeep, making sure that his patrons' mugs never run dry.

Ambassador Flamelash – For his unwavering service to Ragnaros, Flamelash ascended to the rank of ambassador to the Dark Iron clan. This depraved being initially despised his dwarven allies, but he has come to respect their penchant for destruction. As a show of solidarity, Flamelash guards the Chamber of Enchantment, a sacred location used by the dwarves to empower their weaponry.

The Seven – Centuries ago, sorcerer-thane Thaurissan and seven of his most powerful Dark Iron allies accidentally summoned Ragnaros into Azeroth and damned their entire clan to enslavement. Although the Seven perished during the ritual, their restless spirits still linger in Blackrock Depths, cursed to serve their elemental master and the current Dark Iron ruler.

Magmus – Ambassador Flamelash charged the molten giant Magmus with guarding Emperor Dagran Thaurissan's throne room, but not even this act put the Dark Iron ruler's concerns to rest. Ever fearful of assassins, the emperor also granted Magmus control over a series of fire-breathing statues outside his royal chambers.

Emperor Dagran Thaurissan – Emperor Dagran Thaurissan rules alongside Princess Moira of the rival Bronzebeard clan. Debate rages over whether the emperor ensorcelled his bride or she willingly joined him. Whatever the truth, Thaurissan's continued presence bodes ill for the future of his clan. So long as he lives, the Dark Irons will remain pawns of Ragnaros, and a dire threat to kingdoms throughout Azeroth.

Blackrock Depths - How to find Blackrock Depths - Warlords of Draenor-1

Patch changes

Overview

The instance is almost entirely soloable (for Rogues or Hunters, at least, and probably most melee classes) by about tier 5 (level 70), although it is not economically efficient to do so. While there is money to be made here (especially for miners), the sheer size of the instance and the comparatively low level of the mobs mean that there are better instances for farming (notably Scholomance). By level 80, the instance is easily soloable. BRD (and the rest of the Blackrock Mountain complex) is well worth at least one visit. These instances represented the original game's endgame content, and were made with a high level of quality.

Dungeon Finder tips

If you encounter BRD when you enter it through the Dungeon Finder, you can be dropped into 2 parts: The Lower City and the Upper City. There is no sure way of knowing which you have entered but killing the end-bosses of the parts. Clues to the part you are on can be found inside the Dungeon Finder—if Blackrock Depths - Upper City shows a lock in the Specific Dungeons part, then you are definitely in the Blackrock Depths - Detention Block. Additionally, if there are no players less than level 54, then you are definitely on Blackrock Depths - Upper City.

Lower City

To complete the Lower City, go straight forward from the entrance portal into the cellblocks and take to the right and kill High Interrogator Gerstahn. She is the Boss who drops the Satchel. This part is normally chosen while still at the lower level range for the dungeon.

Upper City

To complete the Upper City, players must kill Emperor Dagran Thaurissan—this may be an ideal time to use the Abandoned Mole Machine near the portal entrance, to shorten the length of time clearing the dungeon.

Note: Players will not receive a Satchel for killing the "wrong" boss—it will be one or the other depending on which one the dungeon finder selected.

Professions

Dark Iron

Blacksmithing

Scattered around Blackrock Depths are Blacksmithing Plans which appear as scrolls that can be clicked on with a gear icon. Only a high level Blacksmith should click on these plans, if anyone without high level blacksmithing attempts to use them the plans will be destroyed. Opening the scroll will teach you one of the following BoP plans:

Places to find different plans:

  • Beside Golem Lord Argelmach in a room inside the Manufactory
  • In the Manufactory on a bench on the right, near the bridge to the Grim Guzzler
  • In the room before The Seven, beside the stairs
  • Near General Angerforge on a table
  • On a wall shelf in the northwest corner of the East Garrison's upper level

Engineering

Several engineering schematics are available only in the Depths.

Quests

Detention Block (Lower City) - 47-57

To complete the Detention Block, you go straight forward into a large open cavern, then turn right into the cell blocks, and kill High Interrogator Gerstahn at the end of the hallway. She is the boss who drops the Satchel. It's a rather quick trip.

Upper City - 51-61

To complete the Upper City, you have to kill the Emperor. This journey will take quite some time due to BRD's size.

If you have already killed the High Interrogator Gerstahn, you will not get the Satchel on killing the Emperor; you will instead get it by mail. There have been no reports as to what happens to the bonus XP you are supposed to get.

Tip: If your group consists of mostly lvl 52+ chars and Upper City is yellow, while Lower City is green - go for the Emperor without killing the High Interrogator Gerstahn.

Other details

Dark Iron

BRD is one of the two places where Dark Iron ore can be mined reliably, the other location being Molten Core. Since patch 1.7, dark iron ore nodes have begun to appear rarely in the Burning Steppes and the Searing Gorge. BRD is also the location of the Black Forge and the Black Anvil. The Black Forge is the only place where dark iron ore can be smelted into bars. The Black Anvil is required for most crafting recipes that require dark iron bars. As such, a BRD run is essential to almost any blacksmithing or engineering work which uses that rare metal.

Blacksmithing

Scattered around BRD are Blacksmithing Plans which appear as scrolls that can be clicked on with a gear icon. Only a high-level Blacksmith should click on these plans; if anyone without high-level blacksmithing attempts to use them the plans will be destroyed. Opening the scroll will give you one of the following BoP plans:

Also, the plans within are BoP so you may want to roll before using them if you have multiple smiths.

Places to find plans:

  • Beside Golem Lord Argelmach in a room inside the manufactory
  • In the manufactory on a bench on the right
  • In the room before the 7 ghosts, beside the stairs
  • Near General Angerforge on a table
  • On a wall shelf in the northwest corner of the East Garrison area's upper level

Engineering

Several engineering schematics are available only in the Depths.

  • Schematic: Field Repair Bot 74A: appears as a scroll on the ground near Golem Lord Argelmach.
  • Schematic: World Enlarger: drops from the weapon technicians in the Manufactory.
  • Schematic: Gnomish Alarm-O-Bot: drops from the weapon technicians in the Manufactory.
  • Schematic: Dark Iron Rifle: drops from the doomforge craftsmen in the Manufactory.
  • Schematic: Goblin Jumper Cables XL: drops from Plugger Spazzring.

Dungeon Journal

The smoldering Blackrock Depths are home to the Dark Iron dwarves and their emperor, Dagran Thaurissan. Like his predecessors, he serves under the iron rule of Ragnaros the Firelord, a merciless being summoned into the world centuries ago. The presence of chaotic elementals has attracted Twilight's Hammer cultists to the mountain domain. Along with Ragnaros' servants, they have pushed the dwarves toward increasingly destructive ends that could soon spell doom for all of Azeroth.

During the Elemental Unrest, the cavern was entered by the Alliance and Horde to kill Grand Ambassador Flamelash.

Moira later did return to Ironforge, and after the formation of the Council of Three Hammers, the Dark Iron clan joined the Alliance.

During the Fourth War, several parts of the depths were invaded by the Venture Company, and a group known as Shadowy Figures also appeared in the Ring of the Law.

Geography

Location

Blackrock Depths is located inside the lowest part of Blackrock Mountain. To reach it, you will need to cross the chain to the central island, then follow the path downward to a ledge just above the lava. Follow the ledge into and through the Grinding Quarry to find the instance portal.
