Duke Nukem 3D Walkthrough

Do you find yourself consistently lost in Duke Nukem 3D? Can you never get 100% on the levels? If you've always wondered where the fifth secret is in the Tiberius Station level, how to get your way out of Derelict without pulling your hair out, or how to find the Indiana Jones, Snake Plissken, or Capt Picard gags in the game, well, this is for you. This is the official walkthrough for Duke Nukem 3D from 3D Realms. This will show you how to complete every level in the game, where all the secrets are, and probably teach you a few things here and there that you never knew about the game.

This walkthrough works for both the PC and Xbox 360 versions of the game. The screenshots themselves are technically from the Xbox 360 version of the game, but with one minor exception in a single level, they're the same maps, so you can use them on both versions.

If you have any questions about the walkthrough, or wish to discuss it, you can do so in this area of our forums.

When you drop down the air vent early on in the level, you are left in a control room with a chair that has some dots on it.

There are two rooms that open up on the side of the room, one has a teleport, and one does not. Go over to the one that does not have the teleport, and turn on your jetpack, and fly straight up. You will eventually see a small alcove with an Atomic Health. Go in there to get the health to get the first secret.

Secret 2: Hidden computer bank

When you are in the computer area under the main entrance room, you will see a strange symbol on the wall.

If you jump up there, it will lower one of the computer banks in the next room, revealing a secret area that contains an Atomic Health. A sound will play to indicate that the door has opened that is just behind the wall on the right. Go in there to get the secret. Once you go in here, the door will close behind you.

Secret 3: Behind the Holoduke

Secret 4: Computer box

The fourth secret is in the room with all the boxes. In one corner is a computer. If you "use" the computer tower (not the monitor) one of the boxes in the room will open, revealing some scuba gear and armor. Go in there to get the gear and the secret.

Secret 5: Crack in the wall

The fifth secret is right next to the fourth. To the left of the computer from the last secret is a crack in the wall. Blow it up. Go in the newly opened area to get the fifth secret of the level.

Secret 6: Bridge to the RPG

The fifth secret contains the way to the sixth secret. Once you are inside the room from the last secret, make your way to the back, you will see a red handprint on a very dark wall. Using this hand will open up a teleport right to the left.

Going through the teleport will put you next to a bridge, which looks very familiar from the kinds of bridges you saw in Episode 1's "The Abyss" level. Crossing the bridge you will see an RPG. Go get it for the sixth secret. From here it's advisable to retrace your steps and not just jump down, or you will have to re-follow a decent sized part of the level to get back to the room of boxes.

Secret 7: Inside the spaceship

Shortly after the room of boxes, you will pass a short conveyor. Let yourself get picked up by the crane, and when it drops you off, you will be in a small computer room with a switch. Flip the switch.

At the end of the corridor behind the red electrical charge shown here will be a teleport that has just opened up. Take it and you will be left in an EXTREMELY SMALL room, with nothing but a switch. Flip the switch, and a door will be opened to the inside of the UFO. Go in here to get the seventh secret, as well as the Atomic health that is in here.

Other hidden compartments

Although widely reported as an official secret, developer Allen Blum confirmed in September of 2008 that the game does not count this as a secret.

When you first get inside the blue Access Card door, there is a computer on a desk in the small alcove right next to the door. If you use this computer (it doesn't matter if it has been blown up or not), it will open a door on the far side of the room. Run over there, and a timed door will have opened with a medkit inside.

The Starting Area

Area with the Red Access Card

The Switch Room

Locate the Access Card

When you first start off the level you’ll find yourself in the Starting Area, a room filled with teleporters none of which lead anywhere as they’re all broken so head straight ahead from your starting position. Once you hit the wall turn right to see a small room located to the right at the end of the short corridor. Head into it.

Here you’ll find Pistol ammo clips littering the floor so collect as much as you can. In this same room you’ll find a pair of lockers which are lowered upon touching them revealing a Secret Area with some Armor.

After collecting all the ammo you can exit the room and turn left and head straight past the room you started the level in. Here you’ll find a larger room with some toxic barrels and a set of stairs as well as a monitor you can access. In this Monitor Room you’ll find three Assault Troopers which need to be dealt with. Shoot the Assault Trooper at the far end of the room. Kill him from where you stand. Once it’s dead turn right to head up a small staircase, at the top is a Pig Cop which needs to be dealt with, after killing him you’ll get a hold of the Shotgun. Heading into the centre of this room will cause four trap doors to open, two on each side, the right side doors contain an Assault Trooper and a Pig Cop while the two doors on the left contain two Assault Troopers. After taking these guys out collect any ammo located in the trap doors and then head to the back of the room where you came up the stairs. Here you’ll see a Red Access Card on a large crate with a smaller crate beside it. Hop onto the small crate and then to the large one to obtain the card which will give you access to the large door at the opposite end of the room.

Locate the Data Disk

Once you open the door take a look to your right and shoot the two Explosive Canisters you see before you to deal with a Pig Cop hidden behind a crate then turn to your left and try to shoot the Assault Trooper standing by it before focusing your attention to the Pig Cop that is also down this corridor. After they are dead head behind the crate that is located to the right of the door you just came through to find a short path leading to the Locate the Exit

After a brief chat with General Graves your new task is to locate the exit. To do this you have to head down the corridor where you just killed the Assault Trooper and Pig Cop. You will end up by a set of stairs that overlook a large room, a kind of Warehouse, with some crates and Pig Cops and one Assault Trooper, this is the room you could have seen through the monitor near the beginning of the level. Try to quickly take out any Pig Cop standing on a large crate. After the room is clear collect any ammo and health before heading through the small door as the large one is locked.

Once you open the small door you will gain access to the Switch Room and be greeted by two Pig Cops and an Assault Trooper. Take them out and then flick the switch at the end of the small room. This will unlock the large door in the adjacent room so head back to it and head on through to complete the level.

Speedruns

The best possible method to speedrun this level is to first off, ignore all enemies then, immediately head straight to the room with the Red Access Card and instead of going up the stairs leap onto the ledge and then onto the crate to get the keycard before heading through the main door. Immediately shoot the Trivia

There happens to be an oversight in this level involving a security monitor that can be accessed via an early room that Duke passes through. This monitor can be accessed giving a view of a warehouse which he will have to travel through near the end of the level. Upon viewing this Duke replies, "Looks like a lot 'a security!" referring to several Pig Cops that can be seen lurking in the warehouse. If the player happens to kill all of the enemies in the level Duke will still reply in the same way even though all of the security has been eliminated.
