          War on the Sea

Firstly I don't feel like i have played enough hours to give a thorough review, but i do have the new player experience perspective to give. I used to play pacific storm : allies and it is a buggy mess, but i loveeed the concept of the game. It allowed you to build your fleet and play in historical scenarios or in your own made up ones. You also had the freedom to customize each ship it was a great game even with the bugs. And i thought this was similar so i insta bought (much regret.)

          Likes:
Attention to detail. I don't really mean graphically, i mean in the way of the weapons descriptions etc.
Custom battles. Its nice to set up your own scenarios.

          Dislikes:
          1. The campaign forces you into certain time periods. I want to start when the war started and fight it how i choose to. If I'm forced to start at a certain point with the goal of building bases its just a very large single mission and not a campaign imo.

          2. Learning Curve -- I don't mind an in depth game. But if your going that direction go all the way and not half way. I did all of the training and still felt like i didn't have enough info. I dunno how they can improve. ( A video, an interactive tutorial maybe?)

          3. Ship control/AI -- If one of my destroyers is close to a target i should be able to set a solution percentage where they fire torpedo's at will. Or they just fire torpedo's at will, I've never witnessed the AI do this in game. Ships won't do anything unless instructed this creates a sick case of micro management to keep ships alive.

          4. Command points -- Gib more. If there wasn't so much micromanaging it would be great to have decent size fleets moving in formation to battle in different areas. If the Ships functioned like they had a crew in it this would be possible and good fun.

          5. Tool tips -- If i hover over a button it should tell me what it does. Like the patrol option for aircraft. I see the arrows, but I'm not sure unless i press it. I feel like there's gonna be a 'Scuttle' option with no info attached.

          Conclusion:
So far, i honestly regret buying. (why does it cost so much. ) I thought IT'd be like pacific storm, but this game try's to be a sim at times and sometimes it doesn't. It isn't fun to play, its a chore to give your ships direction constantly. You really have to be a certain kind of person to enjoy it. Not that its a horrible game, the graphics is decent and the detail is sometimes surprising.

Sigh i wasted so much money on this game. Ill update after i play some more.

The game is definitely must have for all genre lovers. It’s raw and beta all right but the developers are going got great lengths to fix all the issues with it and introduce new features and mechanics. I’m sure there is a great potential behind it.
And it’s just a pleasure to see steel monsters spitting at each other with fire, manoeuvring, evading torp salvos and bomb drops, or arranging timed air attacks on enemy fleets.
          Awesome !

I have never bothered to write a steam review before, but this game is so bad I finally actually decided to do this.

I got used to the awkward tactical camera controls. I got used to awkwardly panning across the strategic map with mouse controls only (why can't we use WASD in strategic mode to pan around the map?). I got used to the clunky menus that feel like they belong to a 15 year old game.

But what really really broke this game for me was when ships start randomly changing course on me when I switch to underwater view. I had manually aligned a destroyer on top of a submarine. Double checked my heading was straight ahead ( <> ). When I popped into underwater view to confirm my ship's position relative to the sub, I noticed that my destroyer was veering off target. Yup, the ship had somehow decided to swing left, off target, all on its own.

I just wanted to micromanage my ships to blow up submarines and have fun. But that's not allowed in this god forsaken game.

I guess if you really love historical sea combat, then you are kind of stuck with this game. But I would rather spend my time playing anything else.

I write this review with a lot of hope for War on the Sea as I see a lot of potential to finally be a worthy replacement for Battlestations Pacific (BSP) which to this day stands out to me as the best WWII Naval battle game I've seen.

First the good: The Graphics are excellent and the game modes allow you to play a strategic historically accurate campaign or just battle a simple skirmish, also the Ships have a nice balance of functionality and depth to have a medium learning curve and keep it interesting but not be so complicated as to discourage people who don't play for hours everyday. This is also all very similar to the before mentioned BSP.

Now the not bad but unpolished or to be improved:
I don't really understand the flying aspect of the game as you cant really fly as much as help guide the plane in a direction.
but the flying isn't really what I'm interested in in this game so ill leave that as is.

What does need some work is the ship controls or more the indications, for how far over the rudder is and and speed, all that information is a tiny arrow in the bottom corner and difficult to keep an eye on in the heat of battle so you end up having to use the slider system which is just annoying because then you have to switch between weapons and repair tab every time you need to change direction or speed. BSP had a big antique ship Telegraph which gave you speed and direction currently set. as a better example

While were talking about navigation, when a ship is following a waypoint the slider controls are locked until you press a maneuver key on the keyboard which since I currently rely on the sliders always leaves me annoyed when my ship isn't letting me emergency maneuver away from a oncoming torpedo.

Then the game has a few graphics points that could be improved, such as the heavy smoke animation is a bit blotchy same with the fire animation you can clearly see the fire explosion image that is used to depict a fire ball. seems like something that could fairly easily be fixed.

Also the Water animation around the ships has a underlying foam layer that when viewed directly form above is clearly statically attached to the ship, just looks a little weird. As does the spray animation around the back and nose of the ship, just needs a little more detail to make it blend nicer from metal to water spray.

I also noticed the big 16/18" guns have no recoil.

other than those details and I do mean details this is a perfectly beautiful game especially the water and sky and generally weather looks amazing as do the ship models.

And one last thing that I would love to see which really brought BSP to life was people walking around on the decks.
just makes the ships more alive and personal.

I recommend this game to anyone who enjoys Pacific theater history or just loves Battleships! And I really hope the hard working dev team as I've seen it can fix some of these points, to really make it the best WWII Naval battle.
