As with other games of this kind, there are two parts to it: the search for the item you need to progress and the sneaking around part.
Searching for the way forward is most of what you do in Slater and it works well. Most of the items are highlighted and not hard to find, the guard patrols are easy to understand, there is a lot of searching but little backtracking, and there are no guessing what the developer's thinking puzzles. The best path is rigid in what you have to do, without time limits beyond dodging guards when sneaking around. On hard mode some of the items are removed and you have to take them by taking out someone and the final rating is adjusted to allow for this.
There isn't much to the sneaking around part of the game. Despite the first person perspective, you do it by relying on the all seeing map. Peeking around corners is pointless when it gives you that same information. Even if you wanted to rely on sound, it's so bad it doesn't tell you anything: since sound doesn't travel much and it ignores walls, you have a bar where you can't hear the music from one end and a hotel room where you can hear the person just above you snoring. And it's not at all obvious how far the guards see. The few times this game tries sneaking around it goes badly. To help with this you get the minimap and the game tells you when you're in a restricted area without a disguise so you won't be surprised.
Even if The Slater doesn't do anything special beyond lock and door puzzles and basic guard patrols, it does well enough with what it has.
